Mission and Vision:

• The Department aspires to develop responsible, secular, liberal and sensible global citizens.
• The Department prepares students for a wide range of careers by teaching a core set of skills through the study of societies, cultures and economies across a broad chronological and geographical spectrum.
• The Department wants to create critically aware individuals and honest academicians who will support history studies and uphold the mantle of the college.

The department is one of the oldest departments of the college. Since the inception of this prestigious institution, the department of History has always been the foremost flag-bearer of academic excellence, of which the college has been striving for. As far as records available, the general course started from the year 1968. A remarkable achievement was accomplished by the department in 1996-97 with the initiation of the Honours course.

Since the last assessment, the impetus for change came for three distinct avenues.

The first is the introduction of CBCS in 2018, second is the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown, and third is the NEP system. Initially, we had several doubts regarding the new system and the new syllabus; and its implementation that’s too under the situation of lockdown. In recent NEP method, we are striving for achieving academic excellence by creating an atmosphere where students’ potential can be blossomed to the fullest.

However, in our pursuit to bring value addition in ourselves we started re-learning and we were able to do so. Attending seminars/webinars while exploring web resources and co-working with colleagues from other colleges we were successful in learning new things.

We encouraged our students to learn from us not only through the classroom lectures but made them realize that they can learn better through student seminars, webinars etc. in physical mode or virtual mode. The department also organized visits to places of historical importance to inculcate a sense of national pride and heritage among the students.

Due to the vibrancy of the IQAC this college has developed a culture of monitoring and with more teaching days in hands the teachers could draw the students more to the college and improve their learning experience.

Another point of pride for the department has been its emphasis on continuous internal assessment. This has enabled us to initiate formative assessment in place of summative assessment.

Before I conclude, it requires to mention that this college aims at enlightening the students, empowering the students, and enriching the students most of whom come from a disadvantageous socio-economic background.

The department of History identifies with this vision and we joined hands with the IQAC to achieve this goal.
