VISION

• The department promote the discovery and broad knowledge about the Geography evolution and their environments. The holistic development of the student and make them able to contribute effectively for their welfare and society in this dynamic era.
• To lead the development of academic, educational, and research directions of human and natural systems, land cover/and land use change and geospatial information science, harnessing the integrative nature of geographic science to answer fundamental questions of global importance.

• To encourage and enhance the use of a wide range of technology, techniques, materials, and facilities in instructional and support services that cater to students with various backgrounds, interests, and abilities.
• Establishing a learning environment through the curriculum that broadens viewpoints leads to responsible citizens and establishes standards that support the best possible performance.
• To conduct disciplinary and integrative research in the physical and social sciences on local to global scales, with a geospatial perspective on our changing world and its sustainability.
• To provide undergraduate students with lively and enjoyable educational experiences while preparing them to address the difficulties connected with the ongoing growth of geospatial science.
• To apply geographic science to societal and environmental issues in our state, the nation, and the global community.

The Department of Geography was founded in 2001 in an able academic environment. For the first six years, it has run with only general course. The Honours course was introduced in the 2006–2007 academic session. At present, the intake capacity of students at the undergraduate level has gone up to 55. The department has enriched faculty members, including one associate professor, one assistant professor, five state-aided college teachers, and one guest teacher, who impart academic guidance to the students. Also, the department has a laboratory attendant who takes care of all aspects of the department to provide the best possible service to the department. From the 2021–22 academic session, enthusiastic students have the opportunity to do Ph.D. research work under the “Coastal Environment Studies Research Centre” (Vidyasagar University). In addition, the department is continuing a six-month certificate course in amin survey (Bhumi Sahayak) from the academic session 2022–2033. Many academic activities, such as educational tours/excursions, outdoor classes, field observations, practical sessions, the publication of Wall Magazine, student seminars, and distinguished lectures, are undertaken by the department throughout the academic session. Besides, the department always takes remedial classes to strengthen weaker students. To cater to the needs of the students and teachers, the department has its own seminar library containing sufficient books. Students in this department also take advantage of the central library of the college for borrowing books and journals. The classrooms are equipped with ICT facilities, and the laboratories are enriched with necessary instruments and modern teaching materials. Besides, the department has one R.S. and G.I.S. laboratory for the students as well as for the project and research work. In order to keep pace with the emerging demand of the students, some master programmes with high academic performance have been carried out by the faculty as needed. Many students in the department have gotten a chance to register at Vidyasagar University as well as other universities to pursue their higher education through merit or by entrance examination.

• ICT-based Class Room: The classrooms of geography department are equipped with ICT and internet facilities, which enhances the quality of the teaching-learning process.
• Laboratory: The laboratory is enriched with the necessary instruments and modern teaching materials such as Theodolite, Digital Theodolite, Dumpy-level, Auto Level, Prismatic Compass, Clinometer, Abney Level, Hygrometer, Barometer, Rotameter, Planimeter, GPS, Air Veda, Digital Conductivity Meter, Tracing Tables, Topographical Maps, Satellite imageries, Soil Kits, Soil Sieve with shaker, different rocks and minerals’ specimens, etc.
• RS & GIS Lab.: The department has one RS and GIS laboratory for the UG students as well as research scholars for the project and research work.
• Departmental Library: The department has its own library, which has a collection of reference books, journals, and other study materials. The departmental library enrich with 107 text and reference books (Accession record on 2023). Students can access the departmental library at any time.
• Faculty Rooms: The department has a separate faculty room where faculty members can do their academic, administrative, and research-oriented work, as well as interact with students.
• Research and Development: Enthusiastic students have the opportunity to do Ph.D. research work under the Coastal Environment Studies Research Centre (Vidyasagar University). Currently, 03 research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Dipak Bisai.
• Career Counselling: The department always endeavours to provide career counselling programs from which students can seek guidance regarding their career prospects in the field of geography.
• Other Resources: The department has a rich collection of teaching-learning resources like maps, models, charts, atlases, etc., which help to understand a subject very easily in the teaching-learning process.
