Mission and Vision

MISSION

1.Educate Students: Teach students about politics to help them think critically and be informed citizens. As Karl Marx said, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.”

2.Research Excellence: Do thorough research in political science to better understand political systems and contribute to knowledge.

3.Community Engagement: Work with communities at all levels to analyze policies and advocate for positive change because “True education makes a person treat all as equals.”

4.Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with other fields to combine political science insights with other areas of study.

5.Diversity and Inclusion: Create a welcoming environment for all perspectives and ensure fairness and equity. Vidyasagar promoted inclusivity, “Education is the birth-right of every human being.”

VISION

1.Foster Critical Thinking: Encourage students to think critically about political systems and their impact on society. As Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This vision emphasizes the importance of questioning and understanding political structures.

2.Promote Ethical Governance: Advocate for ethical principles in governance and political conduct. Immanuel Kant’s words, “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law,” guide this vision, stressing the need for moral integrity in politics.

3.Advance Political Knowledge: Strive to deepen understanding of political theories and practices through rigorous academic inquiry. David Easton’s approach, “The political system is that system of interactions in any society through which binding or authoritative allocations are made,” underscores the importance of comprehensive political study.

4.Encourage Civic Engagement: Inspire active participation in civic life and democratic processes. Aristotle noted, “Man is by nature a political animal,” highlighting the intrinsic role of individuals in shaping political landscapes.

5.Ensure Stability and Order: Aim to create a stable and just political environment. Thomas Hobbes’ assertion, “The condition of man… is a condition of war of everyone against everyone,” reflects the necessity of structured governance to prevent chaos and ensure societal order.

About

  • Welcome to the department of Political Science of Egra Sarada Shashi Bhusan College, where we embody the wisdom that “politics is the art of the possible.” Our commitment is aimed at the successful achievement of academic goals that encourage critical thinking, civic engagements, and a profound understanding of the political landscape. In this era the knowledge of political science is paramount for guiding a person through the complexities of a modern state, especially a state like India, which is massively diverse to the roots. Keeping in view all these factors the founder principal, as well as the Founding father of this college has introduced the discipline of political science in 1968 (both Bachelor of Arts Honours and Pass), which makes the department one of the oldest departments of the college.
  • Since its inception our department has been the beacon of academic excellence, offering both BA Honours and Pass courses. In 2018 we embraced the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) system and ensured that the new pattern delivers a comprehensive and dedicated curriculum to the students so that they can become influential citizens of the state and contribute in the dynamics of the government, power and societal structures. In the turn of 2023 we started the New Education Policy (NEP) system to provide holistic education.
  • At the heart of our department there is a dedicated faculty comprising four full-time teachers and three State Aided College Teachers, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to evoke and enrich the experience of learning environment. We believe that true strength of an academic institution lies in the intellect and strategic prowess that we inject into the minds of our students, as Kautilya, the ancient Indian strategist, wisely proclaimed “No one can defeat a powerful mind.”

Facilities

  • Departmental Library: The Department of Political Science has its own library with a collection of books of over 166, and journals, and other reference materials .
  • Smart Class Room: The Department has a Smart Classroom for its own, consisting a Projector and a Screen.
